Masjid Functions in Islamic Communities
All Praise is due to Allah; we praise Him and
we seek help from Him. We ask forgiveness from Him. We repent to Him; and we
seek refuge in Him from our own evils and our own sins. Anyone who is guided by
Allah, he is indeed guided; and anyone who has been left astray, will find no
one to guide him. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, Only One
without partners; and I bear witness that Muhammad SAW is His messenger.
Our blessings and greetings may be bestowed
upon our role models, our great Prophet Muhammad SAW, also to his friends and
his beloved wives and to each of his followers, who well followed him to the
end of time.
Dear Muslims:
Allah Ta’ala Said,
The mosques of
Allah are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day
and establish prayer and give zakāh and do not fear except Allah, for it is
expected that those will be of the [rightly] guided. (QS. At-Taubah: 18)
The Masjid has
an important role in fostering the ummah and society, and it is a blessed
building, from which goodness emerges and spreads. Therefore, when the Prophet Sallallaahu
'Alaihi Wa Sallam moved to Medina, the first building he built was a masjid,
even before building a home for himself. He was to start building a
Masjid with his companions.
It was at the
masjid that He educated the people, taught them the correct aqidah, the right
worship, the right morals and the true mu'amalah so that his companions became
the best people.
Masjid, is actually a place
to worship. However, worship is not only related to human relations with Rabb (habbluminallah),
but also with relationships with fellow humans (habluminannas). The
mosque was also used at the time of the Prophet Muhammad Sallallaahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam as a place for
deliberation, discussion about religion, social issues and the benefit of the
people.
In the verse of the Koran that has been
mentioned earlier, Masjid will be only maintain or tend by who: (1) Mukmin, (2)
establish prayer, (3) give zakāh, and (4) do
not fear except Allah. It is hoped that such (illustrious) persons will
be among the ones guided to achieve their expectations (especially in the
Hereafter).
Dear Muslims:
Then how to tend the masjid?
1.
Masjid is a
spiritual and religious institution.
Within the mosque, worshipers are to feel satisfaction, attain
tranquillity, acquire mercy and devotion, and release daily worries. People are
encouraged to interact with one another on the basis of love, equality,
cooperation, and by seeking Allah’s pleasure.
2.
Masjid is an
educational institution.
The masjid was islamic educational center in which different educational
activities took place. The mosque was the first organized collective school for
men, women, and children in Arab history. The Prophet Muhammad Sallallaahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam taught the Qur’an and explained its verses. The
Prophet would sit in the masjid surrounded by a halaqa and instruct his
listeners who would repeat Qur’anic verses and hadith three times until they
had learned them.
3.
Masjid is a Social
Institution.
One unique aspect of the mosque in Islam is its social and community
role. All individuals, men and women, and young and old, are linked to the
mosque. The masjid is seen as an information center social, cultural, and
ritual life. People participate in this institution for consultation and the
exchange of views and ideas. The Rasulullah Sallallaahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam reserved a corner of the masjid as a shelter for the poor who were
known as the people of As-Suffah.
4.
Masjid is an
administrative institution.
During the time of the Prophet, the mosque was the place where all
political, judicial, and social decisions were made. It was a center for
collecting for the needy, for discussions of important matters with companions
through consultation and exchanging of views and ideas, for meetings with
envoys and tribal delegations, for signing agreements, and for judging
disputing parties.
Dear Muslims:
Throughout Islamic
history the mosque, as an institution, played a central role in cultural and
social life. The mosque acted as a focal point of all activities based on the importance bestowed upon it by the Prophet Muhammad
during his lifetime and the life of his companions thereafter. The
distinctiveness of the mosque is linked directly to the worldview of Islam. As
such, it is seen as a way of life rather than as a simple set of rituals to be
performed. Because Islam comprises a complete and comprehensive way of life,
the mosque, with its positive and constructive activities, is at the heart of
the community. The mosque serves the role of a spiritual, educational, social,
governmental, administrative, and preventative institution.
May Allah (SWT)
make this place gather all Muslims to become united. Ameen.
2nd Khutbah
Akimussholah.
